Download And Install Firefox 58 On Ubuntu, Debian And Other Linux

Well Mozilla is set to release Firefox 58 in 3 days and looks like they have already seeded the binary of Firefox 58 on their site. This means anyone is able to download and install Firefox 58 (stable, no beta) on their system. Currently Firefox 58 is not available through automatic stable channel, because they haven't officially released it. But we are going to install it anyway, here is how you can install Firefox 58 Quantum.

Following the below article one should be able to install Firefox on any distro, though some tweak might required on distro accordingly.

Download Firefox 58 Quantum

We will download Firefox directly from Mozilla FTP. Open a terminal and type the following commands.
cd Desktop              #change your working dir to Desktop

For 32-bit Linux
For 64-bit Linux
Now let that finished and you will find a now file on your desktop named firefox-58.0.tar.bz2

Install Firefox 58 Quantum On Linux

To install Firefox 58, type the following commands
sudo tar xjf firefox-58.0.tar.bz2
sudo mv firefox /opt/firefox
sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox

The downloaded Firefox package should not be moved from the desktop for these commands to work. The first command will extract the Firefox to firefox folder. Second command will move the firefox folder to /opt/firefox directory. If you already have a firefox installation (not ESR) on that dir then rename it to like firefox.old. And the third command will create a symbolic link for your newly installed firefox.

Now you have successfully install Firefox 58 on your linux, you can run it form terminal by typing firefox.
When installing firefox like this there will be no menu entry. To add Firefox on your main menu, look for Main Menu settings on control center and add form there. You can also add a desktop shortcut to run Firefox.

To add shortcut, right click on your desktop and click create launcher.
Select Type as Application
Name as Firefox 58 Quantum
Command as firefox
and save it.

    After I download the file, my system says "command not found" after I try the command:

    sudo tar xjf firefox-58.0.tar.bz2

    My laptop has debian stretch 64bit

  2. Have Raspbian Stretch installed on a Raspberry Pi 3 B+. I got as far as launching firefox in the terminal window & got the message
    "pi@raspberrypi:~ $ firefox
    bash: firefox: command not found"
